
At 12:21 am on Wednesday, May 17, the Mountain View Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting smoke coming from a building at the corner of Castro Street and El Camino Real. When they arrived on the scene at 1028 Castro Street firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the building. Upon entering the building they discovered the fire was burning under the roof.
A second alarm was called, then escalated to a third and finally fourth alarm. Units from Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, County Fire and Moffett Ames responded to assist.
Firefighters extinguished the fire by 2 am and prevented damage to one business in the building. Four other businesses, including a liquor store, beauty salon, dry cleaner and Post Office box rental store were completely destroyed.
The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation and no damage estimate is available at this time.
The Mountain View Police Department, PG&E and Fire Associates also assisted during this incident.
